To create Wi-Fi hotspot till windows 7 was piece of cake due to ad-hoc network Tool present in network Control panel but when it comes to Window 8 they forgot or may be left an important feature in modern pc i.e Ad-hoc network . That’s why we can’t create Wi-Fi hotspot in windows 10 or windows 8 directly from network connection
In Windows 7 (and previous OSes), the tool could turn your PC into a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing it to share its Ethernet or other Internet connection with other devices by broadcasting its own network. So, if you paid for Internet access at a cafe, or you’re at work, and want to share your PC’s Internet with your phone or tablet, this feature would let you do that.
It is very possible to do this in Windows 8 and windows 10 , but the built-in method requires fiddling with the command prompt. And for some of us, walking into that black abyss is daunting. So We wll Fisrt Check-out how to create wi-fi hotspot in windows 7 and other OSes than windows 8 method will be disccussed sepreatrly.
Create Wi-fi Hotspot in windows7/xp
A quick and easy solution to create Wi-Fi hotspot in these version of windows is through an app called Virtual Wi-Fi Router.Virtual Wi-Fi Router is a free desktop application for Windows computers. To use the app, your computer must have Wi-Fi capabilities. The app is a very small download and it sets up rather quickly. You are required to configure your adapter for the first run
What sets this tool apart from other hotspot creators are its future features. The app is continuously evolving and incorporating actual router-like features, instead of simply being a connection point.
Configuring First Time
1.Run the downloaded “VirtualWifiRouter.exe” (Either version 1 or 2)
2.If you are configuring for the first time go to Configure tab
- Enter your own access point name which you want
- Enter a password of at-least 8 digits
- Re-Enter the password and press “Setup Hot Spot” button. (Passwords are not stored by the application any where. Once the wifi hotspot creation is done the credentials are given to Windows and it will take care of it. We will clear the old password)
3.If you have already configured you need not worry about configuring again unless you want to change access point name or password.
4.Once configured if you want the same access point and password just press start button virtual wifi will be created and waiting for connections.
5. Once it is started you can minimize it to tray and work on it from system tray.
There are two Method to create wi-fi hotspot on windows 8 and windows 10
Create Wi-fi hotspot through cmd
The Network Shell (netsh) utility is basically developed to let users configure network devices in both client and server editions of Windows. The support for configuring WLAN using netsh was first introduced in Windows Vista, and it’s now available in Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 and Windows8. Using netsh wlan command, one can easily use hosted network (virtualization) feature to create a virtual wireless connection.
[symple_highlight color=”green”]In order to create an wi-fi hotpot i.e an ad-hoc connection in Windows 8 and windows 10 using netsh utility[/symple_highlight],
-Run CMD with administrative privileges’; just type cmd on Start Screen, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
Now, first you need to check weather your network interface can support virtualization or not. Simply, run this command to view Hosted network supported status.
netsh wlan show drivers
If it says No, you need to update your network adapter’s driver. If your NIC supports virtualization, you’re are lucky . Now, enter the following commands to configure an ad hoc wireless connection.
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=<network name> key=<passkey>
Once the hosted network has been set to allow, you need to start the mode to create an ad hoc connection. Just enter the command below.
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
If it says “hosted network couldn’t started”, you need to disable current wireless network device and then enable it. You may also need to refresh network adapter list from Device Manger to install a virtual network device driver.
When the hosted network is started, enable ICS for newly created Wi-Fi connection, if you want to share your internet connection with others.
To enable ICS feature,Network and Internet –> Network Connections, Open properties . Now, open Sharing tab, enable Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection, and then choose the newly created ad hoc connection from the list.as shown in the screenshot above .
Once the internet connection is shared, check the IP address assigned to newly created ad hoc connection from TCP/IPv4 Properties. If it doesn’t assign IP address, then run netsh wlan start hostednetwork command in CMD.
And done Your ad-hoc connection is created or should i say you have create Wi-Fi hotspot for yourwindows 8.
If you find this method a bit geeky and hard to implement then the second method is just made for you
Create Wi-fi Hotspot through Virtual Router Pro
Virtual router pro is a free, open-source program that does the geek work for you, allowing you to quickly fire up an ad-hoc network whenever you need one.
Once you’ve downloaded the file, extract it, and launch the VirtualRouterPlus file within that folder. There’s no real installation here — the program will simply launch.
At this point, setup is easy. Enter a name for your network, then choose a secure password with at least eight characters. Finally, choose the connection you want to share (there will most likely only be one choice), and click Start.
To test it out, grab your phone or tablet and connect to your newly create Wi-Fi hotspot. If it doesn’t show up, stop the connection on your computer, and hit Start again.
Also remember that your computer needs to stay awake and running to keep its ad-hoc network alive. So, tweak your power settings if need be.
